Caroline’s Monthly Letter

Dear Friends,

Autumn seems to be the season of remembering; All Saints and All
Souls days in the church calendar when we remember those whose
lives have inspired our Christian journey, and then those we have
loved who have died, precede the national remembrance of all those
who have died in war, and is followed of course by Advent when we
watch and wait for the return of the one who is the Prince of Peace.
As we become aware of the increasing number of people whose
memories are faltering we are looking, across the dioceses and
within our Mission Area at ways of helping to make our churches
“Dementia Friendly.” We have received a grant towards developing
memory boxes to help prompt conversations with people living with
dementia. Some of the boxes will be given to people with a dementia
diagnosis to create a personal box, of items and photos to prompt
stories and recollections, so that family members visitors and carers
will always have something to talk about. The remainder are going to
be themed e.g. the 1950s, school days, motoring, the seaside, and
will be available to use at coffee mornings, and similar events or to
lend to individuals. If you have any items that you are able to donate
to fill the boxes, e.g. old photos or postcards, old small kitchen
gadgets, an old AA handbook or maps, please let me know, as it’s
surprising how much of the grant will be swallowed by paying
“vintage” prices in junk shops for items lots of us have gathering dust
at the back of a cupboard. Also if you know anyone locally living with
dementia, who would benefit from an individual box please let me
know.

With Every Blessing,

Caroline
