Caroline’s Monthly Letter

Dear Friends,

“Christmas is a time for giving” the advertisers would have us believe. It’s a phrase overwrought parents utter, struggling to encourage their children to be generous: rather than focusing on their ever-lengthening list of things they want from Santa. Of course, the advertisers want to encourage us to give gifts, so we spend money on the stuff that they are trying to sell. And that increases the stress – who do I have to buy things for? What level of gift is appropriate for each person? Is it really the thought that counts or is price a measure of value? Giving and getting it right is stressful.

To engage most deeply with Christmas – we don’t need to give anything -we need to receive. We need to receive the greatest gift ever given.

‘In the beginning was the Word and the Word was with God, and the Word was God….. What has come into being in him was life, and the life was the light of all people. The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness did not overcome it.’

‘And the Word became flesh and lived among us, and we have seen his glory, the glory ‘as of a father’s only son, full of grace and truth.’

The Word is that tiny baby, Jesus. God made man. The greatest gift of all.

With every blessing,

Caroline
